The subtle side of design: what designers notice first
by Alice Viner
You’re at your desk, an email pings through. That shiny new design that you asked for has just landed in your inbox. You zoom in on the colours, the big bold text, the curated imagery. Everything ticks the boxes of your brief and all in line with the brand guidelines, perfect! However, it’s not quite so instant for designers. Our eyes are doing something totally different.
At Form, we love the big wow moments too, but our brains can’t help scanning for the tiny details that hold everything together. If you’ve ever wondered why something just “feels right” but you’re not quite sure why, here’s a peek at what our designer senses tingling.
Kerning and the tiny gaps that matter
Kerning in typography relates to the space between individual letters. We know, it sounds dull, but designers obsess over this. Too tight, and your text feels squished, claustrophobic maybe. Too loose, and it floats awkwardly, potentially confusing it with word spaces. Get it just right, and your text looks balanced and easy to read.
In short: Perfect letter spacing turns a good logo into a great one.

Grids are the hidden skeleton
Although we would love to say all the alignments, sizing and scale within our work is all done by the naked eye… we’d be lying. You have the humble grid to thank. Grids are imperative to help us line up text, imagery, and design elements so they look intentional, not random or just thrown together.
Our clients won’t ever see the magical grid, but once you spot a design without one, it’s almost impossible to unsee the imbalance. Just a little bit of misalignment can look like chaos to a designer!
In short: If it feels neat, thank the hidden lines.

Whitespace gives room to breathe
Whitespace (or negative space) is all the breathing room around your content. Although minimal is favoured by a lot of brands, there’s a fine line between what is too much and not enough. Too little and your design feels cramped and stressful. Too much and there’s a lot of dead space. The right amount makes everything feel premium, calm, and confident.
A good, rememberable design isn’t always about what you add. Sometimes it’s about what you don’t.
In short: Space makes things feel premium. Empty isn’t just empty, it’s intentional.

Consistency is the glue of a brand
Fonts, colours, button shapes, corner radiuses, icon styles are all small details keeping your brand feeling consistent and in sync. When these go rogue, things begin to look messy, and it happens fast.
Armed with a set of brand guidelines and a keen eye, designers hunt for tiny inconsistencies. We look out for these details so that your audience never even notices them.
In short: Consistency keeps everything feeling like it belongs together.

Why it all matters
Clients bring the briefs, that’s how it should be. But it’s the intricate work behind the scenes that makes a brand feel polished. It’s easy to fall into the (bad) habit of thinking ‘that’ll do, it kind of looks right’. However, that habit may lead a brand to lose its spark. Consistency and triple checking keep a brand’s image impressive, credible, and trustworthy. Those tiny tweaks? That’s the forgotten details that turns a decent design into a great one.
Need someone to sweat the small stuff?
At Form, we’re all about the details so you don’t have to be. If you’d like to see how the invisible bits make your brand look its best, drop us a line. We’ll get the kerning right (and everything else too).
